The most easiest way in Linux to start using OpenNIC is to modify the file /etc/resolv.conf. You can do this in 10 easy steps;

  1.  Open up a terminal
  2. Backup the current file, sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.orig (needs root permissions to edit this file)
  3. Type sudo vim /etc/resolv.conf
  4. Leave the search and domain values in tact, modify IP address of the nameserver listed to an OpenNIC one - List found here
  5. Save the file, press : then wq and vim will write & exit

Now test to ensure it is working by pinging www.opennic.glue. If that fails please refer to the F.A.Q for troubleshooting techniques. It is recommended that in that file you have two nameserver values, with an OpenNIC server listed for both. This will ensure that your DNS will continue to work if one of hte DNS servers starts to have difficulties.

If any issues arise that you would like to aks help for, start with the OpenNIC F.A.Q, post a message on the OpenNIC forums or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it requesting assistance.
